Boes and Merdules

The Boes lead taurine mask, a symbol of life force. They wear white sheepskins, a shoulder strap of bells and carazza.I merdules, representing the man, wearing a wooden mask anthropomorphic, white sheepskins, holding a stick, a rope and a leather bag.

Ottana Carnival

There are several hypotheses regarding the origin of this Carnival. Appears immediately evident from the representation, the reference to the dialectical relationship between man and animal.

The Cultural Association Boes and Merdules was established in the early 70s because the customs of the past are not forgotten, because young people are as close to them actively participating in the traditions that characterize the Carnival, so also are known and appreciated outside of Sardinia .

Both boes that merdules dress sheepskin fleece intact and bring her face wooden masks made of wild pear called Carazzas (cara, in Sardinian, meaning face). The boes carry on the shoulder a dense cluster of bells called sas sonazzas or Erru, the merdules unlike boes, do not bring cowbells.

The country is located in the river valley plain Tirso, and is on the border of the Barbagia of Ollolai.   The territory of Ottana is rich in archaeological objects found and dated back to early human settlements, as evidenced by the presence of the Domus de Janas, Nuraghi and Tombs of Giants.
